6 Things You Need To Know To Get A Blog

Before you get started blogging, you need to learn about several services and tools you may choose to use.

If you choose to set up a blog or website that you own and can sell when it becomes profitable, you need to know about domain names, web hosting and Wordpress.org.

If you want to test the water and start a free blog, you could consider services such as Google Blogger, Wix or Weebly.

If you continue reading, I will discuss these services further.

1. What is a domain name?

A domain name is the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) internet address that you buy from a domain registrar and if your keyword phrase (or what you want your web address to be) is available you can then choose from various domain types.

Some of the choices include .com, .org, .net, country-specific endings, and many new domain types.

It is recommended by many people to purchase a top level domain name like .com and if you can't register a .com domain name, get a .net, and next a .org.

Domain names start at a low price but many domain registrars offer extra domains so you can dominate that domain name and you don't have to compete with others that own the same domain but a different type.

If you do decide to purchase extra domain name types it's worth remembering that when it's time to renew your domain names, the bill can be extremely high.

Once you've purchased your domain name, the next step is to purchase web hosting so you can start building your website or internet real estate as some people like to call it.

Many domain registrars offer both domain names and web hosting, and web hosting providers offer domain names.

2. What is web hosting?

Web hosting is a place where you can store your website pages.

A website at a minimum will usual have 4 pages.

The main page name index.html, aboutus.html, contactus.html and a javascript page, javascript.js.

Many people that build websites will never see these pages and most likely will use a content management system (CMS) called Wordpress, which they can install with one or two clicks, or get a web designer to install it for them.

3. What is Wordpress?

Wordpress is a CMS that requires no knowledge of web development languages and gives users the option to install templates and plugins (programs) to change the look of their website by clicking a mouse and editing text.

Web programmers that create templates and plugins have made it significantly easier to have a well designed and functional website within little time and not much effort.

Wordpress.org offers free templates but the best templates are purchased from websites like Themeforest.

Expect to pay anything from US$10-$50 for a template on Themeforest.

Plugins can be purchased from various websites and used for various uses such as setting up a structure for product sales, link cloaking, and other things.

4. Are there any free options?

There are many free options for people that are strapped for cash these include; Google's Blogger, Weebly, Wix, and others.

These providers are also CMSs but you will not be able to sell(transfer) your website to anyone else as you use your personal email to access them.

And even if you own the domain name you don't own the site.

5. Is Blogger a good place to host a blog?

Blogger is a good starting place to host a blog when learning how to become a successful blogger and affiliate marketer.

It offers a What you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) editor, analytics (which are adequate for a person learning to blog), the ability to customize the look and layout with easy editing, and the option of earning money from advertising.

6. Wix and Weebly - A drag and drop (WYSIWYG) system

Weebly and Wix both offer professional looking templates that will make most people sit up and take notice.

They also offer analytics, the ability to customize the look and layout with easy editing, and the option to add advertising.
